This directory contains all of my posts grouped by year from before this [Obsidian](https://obsidian.md/) site existed. These posts have been migrated through a chain that I don't quite remember dating back to some time in 2012 (possibly even earlier posts have been lost to time):
- Some Markdown blogging system
- WordPress
- Markdown system 2
- [Octopress on GitHub pages](https://github.com/olical/oli.me.uk)
- Markdown system 3
- [Custom Asciidoc blog system written in Clojure](https://github.com/olical/blog)
Each of these moves involved porting the posts to some new format or simply a different flavour of metadata and directory structure. Over time the images broke in places, links got mangled and code blocks lost highlighting.
I've done my best to restore things at each step, especially in this last one into Obsidian. each move was usually accompanied by a move in hosting too, so you'll see a lot of posts about being on Linode or Fly or whatever. Same goes for flipping between Vim and Emacs, apparently I did that a lot back in the day.
I now realise people don't really care about those sorts of ephemeral personal events so I'll try to focus on pages I can cultivate and keep relevant rather than thoughts that grow quickly out of date. My [Mastodon](https://mastodon.social/@Olical) is where I can toot my ephemeral thoughts to my hearts content anyway.
## A note on quality
There's the odd gem deep inside the archive ([[Clojure socket prepl cookbook]]), some real stinkers ([[Sliced text effect]]) and some that are just a bit immature or melodramatic ([[Do things that scare you]]). I leave all of these up, preserving the URLs as best as I can, partially to not leave dead links on the internet but also because it captures _me_ changing over time.
It's kind of fun to look back on these old things, spotting some good ideas and thoughts as well as others that were clearly being pulled out of my arse. Some of this is useful but it's mostly just an archive of my past ideas that I thought were interesting enough to write up at the time.
## The future
And now everything is here, in Obsidian. I threw my hands up and just paid someone to give me a great UX so I could do what I care about, I guess I'm maturing. I'll be continuing to clean up these posts and their links as I spot issues (please tell me on [Mastodon](https://mastodon.social/@Olical) if you spot something awry!) as well as create more wiki-ish content here in my garden of knowledge.
I'll try to cultivate guides and sections that teach things, when they fall out of date they should be tagged as such or deleted so as not to mislead (like old blog posts do!). So the content will be different now, but hopefully better. Good luck finding something good in this directory!
